I consulted my book about the Enchanted Rock area, and from the photos I’m suspect this might be a painted lady. It’s not a monarch, for sure — that and the Gulf frittilary are the two I’m sure of. Well, and a couple of swallowtails. Otherwise, I have to pour over the books, and then guess!

Heute hab ich an dich gedacht, als ich las, dass es große Unwetter in Texas u.U. gegeben hat, ich hoffe ihr seid verschont geblieben?!

Danke, liebe Ulli, dass Du an uns gedacht hast. Wir haben Glueck gehabt. Die Unwetter sind noerdlich an uns verbeigezogen, und Ost-Texas hat es dann boese erwischt. Hier hatten wir zwar auch eine Unwetterwarnung, vor (mehr als) tennisballgrossem Hagel und moeglichen Tornados, ist aber zum Glueck nicht eingetroffen. Und der Regen, den wir mitbekommen haben, war leider auch viel zu wenig. Gerade mal 2,5 Liter/Quadratmeter.

Da bin ich aber froh, auch wenn der Regen nicht gereicht hat, aber lieber so als Verwüstung, nicht wahr?! Die Bilder waren wirklich schrecklich!

I don’t know enough about butterflies, but maybe – judging from the upper side of it’s wings, which is only visible to a small part – it might be a Monarch.

What an interesting design on the butterfly, specially made to scare away predators.

I think. it’s the underside of the wings, showing up when folded, that is meant to fool/scare away predators.

I can see how it would work. Those look like eyes and that’s enough to suggest a bigger animal.
