That’s Texas, Too [#1]

On January 17, 2007, we had a once-in-a-lifetime experience in Karnes County: ice-rain, and that made for some strangely interesting views of the brush country behind our house and property. Here’s an – admittedly somewhat (over)dramatized – view of the typical southern Texas semi-arid countryside, with Cacti, Mesquite trees, other brush, and – of course – the quintessential water tower:

Am 17. Januar 2007 hatten wir ein ziemlich einmaliges Erlebnis in Karnes County: Eisregen, und das bescherte uns einige seltsam-interessante Ansichten von der Buschlandschaft hinter unserem Haus und Grundstück. Hier ist ein – zugegeben etwas (über)dramatisierter – Ausblick auf die typische halb-aride Landschaft im südlichen Texas, mit Kakteen, Mesquite Bäumen und sonstigem Buschwerk, und – natürlich – auch mit dem archetypischen Wasserturm:

    1. Glad you like that picture, Robert. All that ice on the landscape made for some weird sights. With you, „way up north“, ice rain etc. is, of course, not a rarity. It certainly is absolutely rare here. I’ve seen it only that one time.

      freut mich, dass dieses Bild Dir gefaellt. Bei diesem Eisregen [eine absolute Seltenheit hier im suedlichen Texas] hat es einige wirklich interessante Strukturen geschaffen. Ich denke, ich werde noch mehr davon zeigen.
      Das Thema „Fracking“ ist sehr zweischneidig. Wie ich in meinem anderen Blog [https://wp.me/p4uPk8-2Zc] gerade geschrieben habe, waeren wir mit ziemlicher Sicherheit nicht von Karnes City weggezogen, wenn es dort nicht die Oelfoerderung gegeben haette und noch gaebe, aber andererseits haben wir nur dadurch [denn wir bekommen ja von dem Kuchen ab, weil auch unter Marys Grundstueck Oel gefoerdert wird] die finanziellen Moeglichkeiten, uns hier anzusiedeln. Ich denke, ich werde bald einmal mehr zum Thema Oelfoerderung auf meinem anderen Blog schreiben.

        1. Gern geschehen, liebe Martina. Und uns interessiert das Thema auch sehr. Wir sind ja so nahe dran. Obwohl, was heisst schon „nahe dran“: es betrifft ja die gesamte Welt.

  8. I was living aboard a sailboat in about 1993 when a strong norther/ice storm rolled through here. One of my neighbors neglected to turn her boat around, and when the companionway iced up, there was no way for her to get out until people started checking on one another and discovered her plight. We forget what life was like before cell phones!

    1. Now that’s something, Linda. I would never have thought this possible. Amazing!
      Btw, it certainly was before (universal) cell phones, but didn’t they have something like VHF-telephone on board?

      1. Sure. But I don’t know a live-aboard who kept VHF on at the dock, unless they were involved with a cruising net on Sunday mornings or some such. If we wanted to make a phone call, we had to walk up to the single pay phone by the showers and laundry area.
