Working-Barges on the Missouri   10 comments

After I started yesterday to blog again about our „RailTrailsRoadTrip“ in October last year, to finally get that to an end, I decided to take that trip up again here, too, with some single pictures. Here, then, is one from our day 9, when we travelled from Collinsville/IL to Hermann/MO, and had a short stop at the banks of the Missouri River:

St. Louis/MO Bridges – Continued   14 comments

It’s quite a while since I last published any of my pictures from our „RailTrailsRoadTrip“ in October last year. So I really need to continue. Here’s a picture of Eads Bridge. We passed underneath it on our 2-hour cruise of the waterfron to St. Louis.

This picture has been edited, I must admit, both with ACDSee Ultimate 9 [for a light equalizer] and with easyHDR [for enhancement of details], but I think this brings out the fine metal structure very well, even if it does look a tad artificial.

Dogleg Bridge   2 comments

As mentioned in my previous posting, the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge is quite unique as it has a dogleg [20-degree bend] right in the middle:

A Bridge with a Dogleg

The reason for this unique feature: the planners had to allow for

  • a 90-degree angle for barges passing underneath, directly into or with the flow of the Mississippi, and
  • putting the foundations on solid rock.

For more information about this bridge check out „RailTrailsRoadTrip – Day 7 [ Old Chain of Rocks Bridge]“ in my blog „Pit’s Fritztown News„.
