West Texas Appetithäppchen #5: Sul Ross State Universität/Alpine – Longhorn Skulptur
This sculpture on the campus of the Sul Ross State University in Alpine/Texas was donated by artist Harold Nichols, and alumnus of the university. It it made of enough steel to build an automobile.
Diese Skulptur auf dem Campus der Sul Ross State University in Alpine/Texas wurde vom Künstler Harold Nichols, einem Absolventen dieser Universität, gespendet. Sie besteht aus genug Stahl, um daraus ein Auto zu bauen.
Vermont und Anderswo – Appetithäppchen #3 [Radeln auf dem Island Line Rail Trail in Burlington/Vermont]
As I wrote on my other blog, „Pit’s Fritztown News„, in the post „Vermont and Elsewhere – Appetizers #3 [Biking the Swamp Rabbit Trail in Greenville, South Carolina]„, Mary and I have a goal to bicycle at least 10 miles in every state of the USA, and part of our trip to Vermont and back was for this purpose. Our first bike trail was the Island Line Rail Trail in Burlington, Vermont, a former railroad track, much of which crosses Lake Champlain on a dam – a really wonderful cycle path with super blue water, but also much lush green, left and right. Here I’m only going show a few pictures. A detailed description follows.
Wie schon in meinem anderen Blog, „Pit’s Fritztown News„, im Beitrag „Vermont und Anderswo – Appetithäppchen #3 [Radeln auf dem Swamp Rabbit Trail in Greenville/South Carolina]“ geschrieben, haben Mary und ich ja das Ziel, in jedem Bundesstaat der USA mindestens 10 Meilen zu radeln, und ein Teil unserer Reise nach Vermont und zurück diente diesem Zweck. Unser erster Radweg war der Island Line Rail Trail in Burlington in Vermont, eine ehemalige Eisenbahntrasse, die zu eine großen Teil über einen Damm im Lake Champlain führt – ein ganz wunderbarer Radweg mit superblauem Wasser, aber auch mit viel üppigem Grün, links und rechts. Hier zeige ich nur ein paar Bilder. Eine ausführliche Beschreibung folgt.
Courthouses in Texas – Noch ein Appetithäppchen [Das Coryell County Courthouse in Gatesville/Texas]
On our recent trip to Vermont and back I took the opportunity to take pictures for my photo-project „Texas Courthouses“. On our way up we passed, among others, through Gatesville, the county seat of Coryell County, and here’s their courthouse:

Nachdem wir heil in Middlebury in Vermont angekommen sind, kommt hier nun das erste Appetithäppchen, von unserer letzten Pause am Crown Point, ehe wir über die Lake Champlain Brücke nach Vermont hinein gefahren sind:
Fort Davis Kurzreise – Appetithäppchen #4: das Paisano Hotel in Marfa in West Texas
In the meantime I’m as good as done – finally – with my report on our trip to California and back last year and could therefore start with the report on our short trip to Fort Davis in April this year, but that will probably take a while , because a week from today we will be on a long journey again, for a total of almost 4 weeks, all the way up to Vermont. I don’t think I’ll be able to finish my reports on the Fort Davis trip before then, because there is still a lot to prepare before our trip to the Northeast on th eone hand and on the other hand I haven’t even scrutinized all the pictures for the report, let alone edited them. So here comes an appetizer, about the Hotel Paisano in Marfa, one of the very well-known hotels not only in the area, where we dined for my birthday. It’s a very stylish hotel, inside and outside:
Mittlerweile bin ich zwar so gut wie fertig – endlich – mit meinem Bericht über unsere Reise nach Kalifornien und zurück im vergangenen Jahr und könnte also mit dem Bericht über unseren Kurztrip nach Fort Davis im April diesen Jahres beginnen, aber das wird wohl noch eine Weile dauern, denn heute in einer Woche werden wir schon wieder auf einer langen Reise sein, insgesamt knapp 4 Wochen, bis hinauf nach Vermont. Ich glaube kaum, dass ich meine Berichte über den Trip nach Fort Davis noch vorher fertigstellen kann, denn es gibt noch eine Menge zu erledigen, und für der Bericht habe ich noch nicht einmal alle Bilder gesichtet, geschweige denn bearbeitet. Daher kommt hier einmal ehr ein Appetithäppchen, über das Hotel Paisano in Marfa, einem der sehr bekannten Hotels nicht nur in der Gegend, in dem wir zu meinem Geburtstag gegessen haben. Es ist ein sehr stilvolles Hotel, drinnen wie draußen:

The Hotel Paisano – THE Iconic Hotel in Marfa in West Texas
This hotel, which was built in 1930 and in the 1930s and 40s was mainly frequented by cattle ranchers, became famous when in 1955 it became the base for the filming of the movie „Giant“ for months and stars such as James Dean, Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor lived there. Some rooms are still named after them. For example, there is a „James Dean Room“ and an „Elizabeth Taylor Suite“.
Berühmt wurde dieses im Jahre 1930 erbaute und in den 1930er und -40er Jahren im Wesentlichen von Rinderranchern besuchte Hotel, als es im Jahre 1955 für Monate die Basis für die Dreharbeiten des Films „Giant“ wurde und Stars wie James Dean, Rock Hudson und Elizabeth Taylor dort wohnten. Einige Zimmer sind immer noch nach diesen benannt. So gibt es z.B. einen „James Dean Room“ und einer „Elizabeth Taylor Suite“.
