For this year, besides his once-a-month photo project „Food“, Roland [of the „Royusch Unterwegs“ blog] has started a weekly photo challenge. For this week the subject is „Books“, and I would like to take part with a picture from years past, a picture from my study at home in Germany:
Rolands wöchentliche Fotochallenge [09.05.2021]: Bücher
Für dieses Jahr hat Roland [vom Blog „Royusch unterwegs“] neben seinem monatlichen Fotoprojekt zum Thema „Nahrung“ auch eine wöchentliche Fotochallenge ins Leben gerufen. Für diese Woche ist das Thema „Bücher“. Daran möchte ich mich mit einem Bild aus lange vergangenen Jahren beteiligen, einem Bild von meinem Arbeitszimmer in Deutschland:
In this study, I was almost completely surrounded by books. With the exception of the wall above the desk [the desk chair can still be seen in the picture on the right] and the window wall the entire room had bookshelves from floor to ceiling, and also a double-sided bookshelf as a room divider. You can see it here with the foot of my bed behind it. I’ve always felt absolutely comfortable there, and my biggest regret is still that I was only able to take very few of these books with me when I moved to the USA: no computer, no e-book and no Kindle are fit to hold a candle to a library of „real“ books, let alone replace it.
In diesem Arbeitszimmer war ich fast total von Büchern umgeben. Mit Ausnahme der Wand über dem Schreibtisch [der Schreibtisch-Sessel ist gerade noch rechts im Bild zu erkennen] und der Fensterwand hatte der gesamte Raum Bücherregale vom Fußboden bis zur Decke, und auch ein doppelseitiges Bücherregal als Raumteiler. Man sieht es hier mit dem Fußende meines Betts dahinter. Dort habe ich mich immer absolut wohl gefühlt und mein größtes Bedauern ist immer noch, dass ich nur ganz wenige dieser Bücher bei meinem Umzug in die USA mitnehmen konnte: kein Computer, kein E-Book und kein Kindle können einer Bibliothek aus „echten“ Büchern das Wasser reichen, geschweige denn sie ersetzen.
By the way, my favorite place to work during my studies was the magazine in the library of the English Department of the University of Bonn. Since I was in charge of the library for a while, I had access to the magazine and was able to sit at my desk there, surrounded by old and valuable books, with a view of the Bonner Hofgarten. However, this „work“ environment always inspired me much more to dream than to work.
Mein Lieblingsarbeitsplatz während des Studiums war übrigens das Magazin der Bücherei des Englischen Seminars der Universität Bonn. Da ich eine Zeit lang die Bücherei geleitet habe, hatte ich Zugang zum Magazin und konnte dort, umgeben von alten und wertvollen Büchern am Schreibtisch sitzen, mit Ausblick auf den Bonner Hofgarten. Diese „Arbeits“umgebung hat mich allerdings immer wesentlich mehr zum Träumen als zum Arbeiten inspiriert.
