Friday Filler, aka Friday Flashback: Summer 2001 in Germany – Bacharach

Let’s continue again with a few more pictures and remarks from Mary’s first trip to Germany in the summer of 2001:  Bacharach was our last stop on this trip – if you disregard the fact that we spent one more night in Wiesbaden so that Mary was closer to Frankfurt Airport for her return flight early in the morning. Bacharach is still one of Mary’s favourite cities in Germany, and her face always lights up when we pass close by again.

Weiter mit ein paar Fotos und Anmerkungen zu Marys erster Deutschlandreise im Sommer 2001: Bacharach war unsere letzte Station auf dieser Reise – wenn man einmal davon absieht, dass wir noch eine Nacht in Wiesbaden verbracht haben, damit Mary näher am Flughafen Frankfurt war für ihren Rückflug am frühen Morgen. Bacharach ist nach wie vor eine der Lieblingsstädte Marys in Deutschland, und ihr Gesicht leuchtet immer auf, wenn wir einmal wieder nahe daran vorbeikommen.

It was in the „Thürmchen“, by the way, where I got to know „Köstritzer Schwarzbier“ and „Solyanka“ for the first time, and both tasted excellent.

Im „Thürmchen“ habe ich übrigens zum ersten Male mit „Köstritzer Schwarzbier“ und mit „Solyanka“ Bekanntschaft gemacht, und Beides hat mir ausgezeichnet geschmeckt.

Two anecdotes about Schirgiswalde:

Our room in the „Thürmchen“ was way up under the roof, and to do this we had to go up a couple of narrow and steep stairs, and at the end also up a spiral staircase. That was quite exhausting, because Mary had only packed a single suitcase instead of two for the trip, and it was correspondingly heavy, large and unwieldy.

While taking a walk, I was congratulated for speaking German so well, and this is how it came about: Mary and I spoke in English, of course. On the street, we were approached by two girls [teenagers] who were happy to be able to use their English. But when I also spoke German to them once in a while, and I received the compliment, „You do speak German well!“

Zu Schirgiswalde noch zwei Anekdoten:

Wir haben im „Thürmchen“ weit oben unter dem Dach gewohnt, und dazu mussten wir ein paar enge und steile Treppen hoch und am Ende auch noch eine Wendeltreppe. Das war das schon recht anstrengend, denn Mary hatte für die Reise statt zweier nur einen einzigen Koffer gepackt, und der war dann entsprechend schwer, groß und unhandlich.

Bei einem Spaziergang wurde mir gratuliert, dass ich so gut Deutsch spreche, und das kam so: Mary und ich haben uns natürlich auf Englisch unterhalten. Auf der Straße wurden wir von zwei Mädchen [Teenagern] angesprochen, die sich freuten, ihr Englisch anwenden zu können. Ich habe dann aber auch mal Deutsch mit ihnen gesprochen, und da bekam ich das Kompliment, „Sie sprechen aber gut Deutsch!“
