National Park Week

Let’s celebrate this week with a picture of a spectacular sunset over the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, aka known locally simply as „The (LBJ) Ranch“ and give our heartfelt thanks to all the rangers and staff there, and on all other National Parks, for their dedicated service that makes it possible for us to enjoy our visits:

When we were at the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, the former LBJ Ranch, last Saturday to watch „Support Your Local Sheriff“ in their series „Movies under the Stars“ [more here in my other blog „Pit’s Fritztown News“], I took quite a few pictures, and without my doing my smartphone – or Google Photos, rather – created a panorama:

Texas Summer #3

Here’s another in my series of Herefords resting under the oaks on the LBJ Ranch in Stonewall/TX. The Herefords there, btw, are being (re-)bred to the standard of those Lyndon B. Johnson had when he owned and worked the ranch. If I remember correctly, they are somewhat stockier than „modern“ Herefords. You might also notice the downward-curved horns: they are grown that way with little weights on them. This way, the horns are no longer dangerous and don’t need to be clipped.

Hier ist ein weiteres Bild in meiner Serie von Hereford Rindern, die sich im Schatten unter den Eichen auf der LBJ Ranch in Stonewall/Texas ausruhen. Die Hereford Rinder dort werden übrigens auf den Standard zurückgezüchtet, wie ihn der damalige Präsident Lyndon B. Johnson in den 50er Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts eingeführt hat. Wenn ich mich recht erinnere, sind sie im Körperbau etwas gedrungener als „modernes“ Hereford Vieh. Wenn man genau hinschaut, sieht man auch, dass die Hörner nach unten gebogen sind. Das wird bewirkt durch kleine Gewichte, die man an den Spitzen anbringt. Dadurch sind die Hörner dann nicht mehr gefährlich und brauchen nicht gestutzt zu werden.
