Ein weiteres Bild von Hereford Rindern auf der LBJ Ranch in meiner Serie „Texanischer Sommer“:
A „cow and a calf“, aka „one unit“, btw, is a kind of a measurement for acreage hereabouts. It denotes the amount of land that is needed to raise one cow and its offspring without additional food – which is usual here. [The cattle get additional food only rarely, and if so, hay only. That’s why we never had any probem with Mad Cow Disease!] As far as I know, in good pasture land here in our area, it can be as little as 4 acres for „a cow and a calf“, but farther out in arid West Texas, sometimes 200 acres are needed for just one cow and her calf to survive.
Eine „Kuh und ein Kalb“, auch unter dem Begriff „eine Einheit“ bekannt, ist übrigens eine Art Maßeinheit hier in der Gegend. Sie bezeichnet die Land-/Weidefläche, die nötig ist, um eine Kuh und ihr Kalb groß zu bekommen ohne zusätzliches Futter – was hier üblich ist. [Zugefüttert wird, wenn überhaupt, nur Heu. Daher gab es hier auch nie Probleme mit Rinderwahnsinn.] Soweit ich weiß, reichen hier etwas über 15.000 Quadratmeter guten Weidelandes für „eine Kuh und ein Kalb“, während es im ariden West Texas manchmal um die 800.000 Quadratmeter, also fast eine Quadratkilometer benötigt, damit eine Kuh und ihr Kalb genügend Futter finden.
