When I was just looking through the pictures I took this year I realized that I haven’t shown any yet from our trip to the coast earlier this year, in March. Well, here’s one I took at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center:
Bei der Durchsicht meiner Bilder von diesem Jahr ist mir bewusst geworden, dass ich noch gar keine Bilder von unserer Tour an die Küste im März diesen Jahres gezeigt habe. Nun, hier ist eines, das ich im Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center gemacht habe:
While we still were in Port Aransas, our favorite place on the Texan Gulf Coast, for a few days in October, I already made two contributions [„At the Marina“ and „Port Aransas Breakfast„], but as other contributions will take a while because I am still in the process of sifting through and editing all of the pictures I brought with me, I’d like to show here [and on my other blog, „Pit’s Fritztown News„, again under the title of „Port Aransas October 2021 – Appetizer„] an appetizer once more:
Noch während wir im Oktober für ein paar Tage in Port Aransas, unserem Lieblingsort an der texanischen Golfküste, waren, hatte ich ja schon zwei Beiträge [„At the Marina“ und „Port Aransas Breakfast„] dazu gebracht, aber da es mit weiteren Beiträgen noch etwas dauern wird, weil ich noch dabei bin, alle Bilder, die ich mitgebracht habe, zu sichten und zu bearbeiten, möchte ich hier [und ebenso auf meinem anderen Blog, „Pit’s Fritztown News„, ebenfalls unter dem Titel „Port Aransas Oktober 2021 – Appetithäppchen“] einmal mehr ein Appetithäppchen zeigen:
I did this on our way back from Goose Island State Park. You can’t actually have been there without paying a visit to the „Big Tree„. This stately and ancient oak is really stunning. The age of this oak [Quercus Virginiana, aka „Live Oak“], one of the most famous oaks in the entire world, is estimated to be well over 1,000 years, according to more recent findings close to 2,000. Over those years, it has survived an estimated 40 to 50 major hurricanes, including „Harvey“ in August 2017, which „went ashore“ just a few miles away. Damage is obvious, but so far this oak has proven to be indestructible.
Ich habe dieses hier auf unserer Rückfahrt vom Goose Island State Park gemacht. Man kann eigentlich nicht dort gewesen sein, ohne auch dem „Big Tree“ einen Besuch abzustatten. Diese stattliche und uralte Eiche ist schon wirklich bewundernswert. Das Alter dieser Eiche [Quercus Virginiana, hier besser unter „Live Oak“ bekannt], einer der bekanntesten Eichen auf der gesamten Welt, wird auf weit über 1.000 Jahre geschätzt, nach neueren Erkenntnissen sogar nahe an 2.000. Im Laufe dieser Jahre hat sie geschätzt 40 bis 50 schwere Hurrikane überlebt, darunter auch „Harvey“ im August 2017, der nur wenige Meilen entfernt „an Land ging“. Schäden sind zwar unübersehbar, aber bis jetzt hat sich diese Eiche als unverwüstlich erwiesen.
Today I had wanted to take some sunset pictures, and as I can’t get good shots from near our condo because the buildings are in the way, I drove to the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Birding Centre, from where I would have unobstructed views to the west. Here’s a panorama from after the sun had dipped below the horizon:

Wie immer bei meinen Reisen in die USA, so bin ich auch im Sommer 2002 mit Mary in Port Aransas gewesen. Hier ein paar Impressionen:
The big passenger vessel here is a swimming casino. Casinos are forbidden in Texas. So, for a long time, this vessel went from Port Aransas into the Gulf of Mexico, outside of US waters. Then and there operating a casino was allowed.
Das große Passagierschiff ist ein schwimmendes Spielcasino. Da in Texas Glücksspielcasinos verboten sind, fuhr eine lange Zeit dieses Schiff von Port Aransas aus auf den Golf von Mexiko, bis außerhalb der US-Hoheitsgewässer. Dort war dann an Bord das Glücksspiel erlaubt.
Port Aransas had and still has facilities to repair oil rigs. Actually, this picture shows the other side of the Corpus Christi Ship Channel, so it’s not Port Aransas but Aransas Pass.
Port Aransas hatte und hat immer noch Reparaturbetriebe für Ölbohrplattformen. Genau genommen zeigt das Bild Aransas Pass auf der anderen Seite des Corpus Christi Ship Channel, gegenüber von Port Aransas.

I have already posted [here and in my other blog, „Pit’s Fritztown News„, about our stay in Port Aransas in January, including more than one appetizer, but something else keeps coming up and distracts me, e.g. Roland’s and Manni’s (monthly) projects as well as Roland’s weekly photo challenges, and so I haven’t made progress in my reports Port Aransas any further than writing about our holiday apartment there. So here and now there is another appetizer:
