I took this picture already in the spring of 2008, when we were exploring Fredericksburg and its surroundings and were staying at the wonderful Grape Creek Cabin on South Grape Creek.
Entstanden ist dieses Bild übrigens schon im Frühjahr 2008, anlässlich eines früheren Aufenthalts in Fredericksburg und Umgebung, als wir diese wunderbar gelegene Grape Creek Cabin am South Grape Creek gemietet hatten.

Wie vorhin gesagt: wir hatten Glück und der Bach führte immer Wasser – im Frühjahr 2008 [diese beiden Aufnahmen] deutlich mehr als ein Jahr später.
As said in my previous post, we were lucky and there was always water in the creek – in the spring of 2008 [thses 2 pictures here] quite a bit more than year later.

Und so sieht dieses hübsche Häuschen von der Seite aus. Die Veranda hat Ausblick auf den kleinen Bach [der übrigens nicht immer Wasser führt]. Wir hatten aber Glück: jedesmal, wenn wir da waren, war ein stilles Murmeln im Hintergrund zu hören.
And this is what that pretty cabin looks like from the side. The porch overlooks the little creek – which doesn’t always run, btw. We were aleways lucky when we were there and there was a quiet mumrmur in the background.

Und wenn wir dann mal nicht direkt in Fredericksburg, sondern etwas außerhalb [„in the boonies“, wie man hier so sagt] wohnen wollen, dann ist der Grape Creek Bungalow [siehe hier] unsere Lieblingsunterkunft: ein altes Blockhaus [ursprünglich 1820 in Tennessee errichtet] auf einem 160.000 Quadratmeter-Grundstück ganz für uns alleine – außer Ziegen, Schafen und Eseln – und mit einem Bach vor der Haustür. Ruhiger und idyllischer geht es nicht mehr. Und es gibt auch weder Telefon [auch Handy geht nicht] noch Fernseher, und erst Recht kein Internet. Aber ganz ideal, um „die Seele baumeln zu lassen“.
And if we don’t want to live directly in Fredericksburg, but a bit outside [„in the boonies“ as they say here], then the Grape Creek Bungalow [see here] is our favourite accommodation: an old log cabin [originally built in 1820 in Tennessee] on a 160,000 square meter property all to ourselves – except for goats, sheep and donkeys – and with a little stream on the doorstep. It doesn’t get any quieter nor more idyllic. And there is neither a telephone [nor a cell phone] nor television, and certainly no Internet. But it is ideal for „letting one’s soul dangle“.
Apropos „ganz für uns alleine“: es gibt auf dem Grundstück noch ein größeres Haus, für 8 bis 12 Gäste, aber das war, wenn wir da waren, nie belegt.
Speaking of „all to ourselves“: there is a larger house on the property for 8 to 12 guests, but that was never occupied when we were there.
Grape Creek Bungalow
Ob dieses Blockhaus ursprünglich schon diesen Kamin hatte, weiß ich nicht. Er sieht mir eher – obwohl die ja damals auch heizen mussten – wie ein nachträglich angefügtes Teil aus. Aber wir hatten ihn einmal wirklich bitter nötig, als es mal nachts bis auf fast 0 Grad Celsius abkühlte. Links im Bild übrigens „Old Faithful“, unser alter Pick-up Truck, der es immerhin auf 220.000 Meilen gebracht hat, ehe wir ihn verkauft haben.
I don’t know whether this log cabin originally had this chimney. To me it looks more like a part that was added later, although they also did have to heat back then. But at one time we really needed it when it cooled down to almost 32 degrees Fahrenheit at night. On the left in the picture, by the way, there is „Old Faithful“, our old pick-up truck, which after all made it to 220,000 miles before we sold it.
Das Gebäude rechts im Hintergrund ist ein alter Geräteschuppen, der wohl auch mal als Stall gedient hat. Und rechts sieht man auch noch den Stapel Feuerholz, den wir – als es so kalt war – ziemlich dezimiert haben.
The building on the right in the background is an old tool shed, which probably also served as a stable. And on the right you can also see the pile of firewood, which – when it was so cold – we decimated to quite an extent.

Und so – klein aber hübsch – sieht das „Little Yellow House“ von innen aus. In das Bett muss man allerdings richtigehend hineinklettern.

Letzte Woche habe ich in dieser Kolumne die Strassenansicht des „Little Yellow House“ Bed-and-Breakfast hier in Fredericksburg gezeigt. Hier ist nun die Gartenansicht:
Und hier sind dann die Rückfront und die Gartenterasse. Es sitzt sich ganz prima im Schatten unter den riesigen alten Bäumen. Und einen kleinen Grill gibt es auch: für das texasübliche Barbeque.
And these are the back view and the back porch. It“ very nice sitting in the shade of the huge old trees. And there’s a small bbq-pit, too, for the usual Texas Barbeque.
