Roland’s Weekly Photo Challenge [2021-03-21]: „Schatten“

For this year, besides his once-a-month photo project „Food„, Roland [of the „Royusch Unterwegs“ blog] has started a weekly photo challenge. For this week, the subject is „Schatten“, which translates into either „shade“ or „shadow“ in German. It’s good that I maintain two blogs, because that way I can meet Roland’s requirement to only post a single picture on the topic, even though I have two that I would like to show on this topic. My contribution here, „Even Texan Cows Sometimes Need Shade,“ was taken on the ranch of former American President Lyndon B. Johnson, now a National Park, in nearby Stonewall:

Rolands wöchentliche Fotochallenge [21.03.2021]: „Schatten“

Für dieses Jahr hat Roland [vom Blog „Royusch unterwegs„] neben seinem allmonatlichen Fotoprojekt zum Thema „Nahrung“ auch eine wöchentliche Fotochallenge ins Leben gerufen. Für diese Woche ist das Thema „Schatten“. Gut, dass ich zwei Blogs unterhalte, denn so kann ich Rolands Bedingung, nur ein einziges Bild zum Thema zu posten, gut erfüllen, obwohl ich eben zwei habe, die ich zu dem Thema zeigen möchte. Mein Beitrag hier, „Auch texanische Kühe brauchen einmal Schatten“, stammt von der Ranch des früheren amerikanischen Präsidenten Lyndon B. Johnson, heute ein Nationalpark, im nahegelegenen Stonewall:

Even Texan Cattle Sometimes Need Some Shade

To be precise, they are actually not „real Texan“ but Hereford cattle, which were introduced in the second half of the 19th century because of the better meat quality compared to the Longhorns. Of Longhorns, the archetypal Texan cattle, I also have a lot of pictures, but none in/with the shade.

Um genau zu sein, es sind im Grunde keine „echt texanischen“ Rinder, sondern Hereford-Rinder, die schon in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts der besseren Fleischqualität gegenüber den Longhorns wegen eingeführt wurden. Von Longhorns, den archetypisch texanischen Rindern, habe ich zwar auch jede Menge Bilder, aber keines im/mit Schatten.

A „cow and a calf“, aka „one unit“, btw, is a kind of a measurement for acreage hereabouts. It denotes the amount of land that is needed to raise one cow and its offspring without additional food – which is usual here. [The cattle get additional food only rarely, and if so, hay only. That’s why we never had any probem with Mad Cow Disease!] As far as I know, in good pasture land here in our area, it can be as little as 4 acres for „a cow and a calf“, but farther out in arid West Texas, sometimes 200 acres are needed for just one cow and her calf to survive.

Eine „Kuh und ein Kalb“, auch unter dem Begriff „eine Einheit“ bekannt, ist übrigens eine Art Maßeinheit hier in der Gegend. Sie bezeichnet die Land-/Weidefläche, die nötig ist, um eine Kuh und ihr Kalb groß zu bekommen ohne zusätzliches Futter – was hier üblich ist. [Zugefüttert wird, wenn überhaupt, nur Heu. Daher gab es hier auch nie Probleme mit Rinderwahnsinn.] Soweit ich weiß, reichen hier etwas über 15.000 Quadratmeter guten Weidelandes für „eine Kuh und ein Kalb“, während es im ariden West Texas manchmal um die 800.000 Quadratmeter, also fast eine Quadratkilometer benötigt, damit eine Kuh und ihr Kalb genügend Futter finden.

Texas Summer #3

Here’s another in my series of Herefords resting under the oaks on the LBJ Ranch in Stonewall/TX. The Herefords there, btw, are being (re-)bred to the standard of those Lyndon B. Johnson had when he owned and worked the ranch. If I remember correctly, they are somewhat stockier than „modern“ Herefords. You might also notice the downward-curved horns: they are grown that way with little weights on them. This way, the horns are no longer dangerous and don’t need to be clipped.

Texanischer Sommer #3

Hier ist ein weiteres Bild in meiner Serie von Hereford Rindern, die sich im Schatten unter den Eichen auf der LBJ Ranch in Stonewall/Texas ausruhen. Die Hereford Rinder dort werden übrigens auf den Standard zurückgezüchtet, wie ihn der damalige Präsident Lyndon B. Johnson in den 50er Jahren des vergangenen Jahrhunderts eingeführt hat. Wenn ich mich recht erinnere, sind sie im Körperbau etwas gedrungener als „modernes“ Hereford Vieh. Wenn man genau hinschaut, sieht man auch, dass die Hörner nach unten gebogen sind. Das wird bewirkt durch kleine Gewichte, die man an den Spitzen anbringt. Dadurch sind die Hörner dann nicht mehr gefährlich und brauchen nicht gestutzt zu werden.
